The weather is getting colder, the nights are getting longer, and I find myself quite content to curl up under a warm blanket with my cat, a mug of hot chocolate, and a good book. While winter isn’t my favourite season, it is definitely the cosiest!
Literacy, in all its forms, has such an immense impact on our lives. Not just in our ability pursue hobbies (like that good book) but it also has an impact on our health, our self-esteem, our ability to find a good job, and even the cost of our groceries. (If you can read, write and do basic math then you are able to price check and it is much easier to get the greatest value for your money.)
But you have stepped forward and offered to help another person learn a foundational skill. And I am consistently blown away by how giving and generous you are with your time. Some stay with PALS for a brief time, others stay with us for a very long time (the current record is 35 years and still going strong!) but all of you have had an impact on the learners you have met and worked with.
Thank you for giving back and helping to change lives through literacy. You are so very appreciated. I hope you will join me at the upcoming Volunteer Appreciation night!
