Volunteer Coordinator Update – October 2022

October in Canada has traditionally been a month to slow down and appreciate the things in life that we are grateful for. When I was younger, I was grateful for the fun things in life–television, friends, books, video games, etc. As I get older, I find that the things I am most grateful for are the things that I often forget to even be thankful for–shoes to wear, warm coats when the weather gets chilly, and the ability to read. Most of all, though, I am grateful to the volunteers. Each one of you decided that your time, as valuable and precious as it is, was a gift you could give to another person. You are the one showing up for the learners–not just to tutor them literacy skills, but also to support and motivate them, cheering their successes and watching them improve their lives. If it wasn’t for you, PALS could not support so many learners. You are amazing.

In the PALS office this month learners, tutors, and staff shared what they are grateful for, and we were happy to collect some of these responses. Here are a few of my favourites!
